this occurs in ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and win 7 pro 64

This is because when TorBirdy starts, we select Local Folders to prevent it from automatically logging in to your email account; this is a side-effect of doing so.

If you really need to disable the message pane and you are OK with TorBirdy logging in to your last accessed account: open TorBirdy's preferences, go to Privacy Settings and check the Select last accessed mail folder on startup.

This will fix your problem, but TorBirdy will select the last accessed folder and login to that when Thunderbird starts. If you are OK with that, you can safely change this setting and then the message pane will remain disabled.

I ran into this issue today, and not knowing which add-on would cause it, went through disabling and re-enable all my add-ons one by one and restarting Thunderbird each time (that's after noticing it is fixed by starting in --safe-mode, hotting F8, starting in --safe-mode again).

I also got in touch with the kind and helpful folks at's #thunderbird, one of whom suggested:

Just offhand, I don't see any reason why doing what they say TorBirdy has to do should have the side
effect of re-enabling the message pane. With proper investigation, it might be worth filing a change-
request bug with Thunderbird about that.

...but also wrote:

Although I'm not a grand expert. I can see how the underlying implementation of the behavior in TB
might be deeply embedded enough to make removing the side effect difficult, though, so I can see why
they might not want to do it.

Personally I don't feel qualified to file this change request. I'm re-opening this bug, now, just for you to re-evaluate whether or not to file this change request (otherwise we do have a work-around for now, which isn't great since it comes with a privacy impact but it's okay I guess).

So I am happy to report that this issue is now fixed. I investigated some more and found another way of handling this. Thanks for reopening this ticket!

I have tested it but you can also test it (rather, should) if you want. If you have not done this before: clone the repository and then run make. Note that I recommend that you create a separate Thunderbird profile to test it/use a VM, just in case.

What I have now done is that we do not select anything (as compared to selecting Local Folders). This prevents automatic checking of emails on startup and does not have the side-effect of toggling the Message Pane.

(If you do not want to test it, this will be available in the next release and in that case, I will close the ticket.)
