Description (last modified by mikeperry)

Regardless of how many times I turn of Java in preferences, in either TOR or non-TOR state, enabling Tor state by pressing the button enables Java (100% consistency). Since I cannot think of any instance whatsoever that I would wish for Java to be enabled while using Tor, this is especially frustrating. Related issues have been closed as "not a bug", but I respectfully disagree : The TorButton should not enable Java if I have specified that I do not want Java enabled.

I am using Torbutton 1.2.0 (fully updated as of today), Firefox 3.0.1 (fully updated as of today), and Windows Vista Premium on an HP DV8000US laptop.

The problem appears to be in torbutton.js, in the following section :

if(m_tb_prefs.getBoolPref("extensions.torbutton.no_tor_plugins")) {

torbutton_setBoolPref("security.enable_java", "enable_java", !mode,

mode, changed);

} else {

torbutton_setBoolPref("security.enable_java", "enable_java", true,

mode, changed);

}

}

I do not understand how TorButton works well enough to feel completely confident that this is where the problem is and how to fix it, but by tweaking that particular block of code I was able to get TorButton to work the way that I had believed it should work with respect to not enabling Java.

Ah... Comprehension dawns... I was running TorButton with the "Disable plugins during Tor usage (crucial)" setting unchecked, which is not recommended, but I wanted to be able to use some plugins while in Tor mode (just not Java). This probably explains why others are not reproducing the issue :)

Regardless, Tor should never have enabled Java when I had explicitly specified that I wanted it to be disabled, and this is still an issue worth looking into.

Closing because this Torbutton version is so old. If the bug remains on the new Tor Browser Button, let us know.
