Description

Hello,

I encountered problems when I was trying to download the vidalia-bundle on https://www.torproject.org/projects/obfsproxy.html.en using a web proxy.

This is how I usually try to do it:
1) Access a directory of web proxies (like www.proxyliste.com)
2) Once I got a working proxy, I try to download the vidalia-bundle.

Why it is hard to download:
Instead of the direct download links you see when you browse the site using tor browser, the links become "obfuscated" in the web proxies. Often, it is not possible to download the actual bundle, but only a "browse(1).php"-file (or something similar), which is empty.

I don't know if there is anything you can do to prevent this behavior of the proxies, I just wanted to share my experiences and provide feedback.

Thank you so much for your work.

My first thought is "well don't do that then".

Using a web proxy puts all your encryption and authentication in the hands of the web proxy. They can give you whatever file they like. And you can't even use them to reach gmail (see https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq#GetTor), since they can pretend to be gmail, learn your gmail password, etc.

If you do stick to your "download a thing via a web proxy and then run it" plan, you should learn about gpg signatures and how to check them.

I'm inclined to close this ticket, since it isn't really any issue we can do anything about. Unless the original poster has details about what exactly the web proxy does?
