Session Restore Broken

Description

I just upgraded to the tor-browser-2.3.25-4_en-US

In Tor Button 1.4.x, when you set to Security->History, and unchecked the "Block History options", then Session restore would work as expected.

In the new Tor Button 1.5 interface, there is:

  • Don't record browsing history or website data (enables Private Browsing Mode)

If you unchecked "Don't record browsing history", you think this would enable the history AND the session restore. It does not.

So in the new tor bundle, when I now set Options->General->"Show my windows and tabs from last time". Nothing Happens. All modern browsers have a session restore. Eliminating this feature makes the tor bundle unusable for me as a daily browser.

Please fix this, so the tor bundle can be used as a functional daily browser again. I'm sure there are many users like me in Iran and China that use tor daily to get around repressive government firewalls. Many of us are not paranoid about possible privacy issues that enabling the session restore may create.

I also had issues with the new Tor Button 1.5 interface. Until they fix the session restore, control over history, and plugins, I suggest you use 2.3.12-alpha-2_en-US.

Just google "tor-browser-2.3.12-alpha-2_en-US + download" and you'll find lots of mirrors. For me it was the last usable version of the tor browser bundle.

Mike,
When you uncheck "Do not record browsing history (Private Mode), it should give the control of the history back to the user.

For example, with a fresh install of tor-browser-2.4.11-alpha-1_en-US
1 Torbutton -> uncheck "Do not record browsing history
2 Options->Privacy->History -> Remember History
3 Options->General->When TorBrowser starts -> Show my Windows from last time
4 Close TorBrowser
5 ReOpen TorBrowser

All of your windows are lost, and the settings that you changed in Options are reverted back to "use custom". This functionality worked in TorButton 1.4.x but is broken in 1.5.x.

Maybe you need another check box in the TorButton, like "Enable user control over privacy settings" to allow 1.4.x like customization.

Thanks for looking into this.

I pushed a fix for this in mikeperry/1.5-next. It should be fixed in the next TBB (with Torbutton 1.5.2).

In TBB 3.5, this FF setting causes a crash upon exit. Most of the time.
Window and tabs appear to be restored correctly...

This has not happened to me. Also, please don't driveby reopen tickets, especially for regressions unrelated to the original issue. If this is still a problem, file a new ticket and tag it with tbb-crash, and provide more details about platform and if having any specific sites open cause the issue.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
