Check failed again today and it caused issues for people.

TBB needs a local (as in in tor-browser_en-US/Data/ ) home page. We should not load up as our home page on every start - it not only creates a predictable https/http fetch, it also fails badly and confuses users.

I propose a local page and that this local page has a single dynamic element, if any. I've made the most ghetto hack possible - I just put an image tag for check and put some text that says "If you see an onion above this text, your browser is configured to use Tor."

We need to somehow set this as the default home page and ideally, we'd do something more awesome than loading a raw image and using text. It would make more sense to ship both icons and then just see if we can fetch *any* resource over Tor.

The homepage.html is terrible and i just scraped my earlier page of Effectively, I think we need a quick html hack that just displays a red or green onion as expected and perhaps has links to every language on

We could also probably use this as an opportunity to put in a duckduckgo or startpage search box as some kind of easy partnership. Why not? Users expect a home page that does something useful and they uh, expect to see it when they open the browser.

This should also improve perception of latency. Tor is already feeling slow for a lot of people - we could also launch Tor Browser and Vidalia at the same time, rather than sequentially with such a home page.

Mike - what do you think of having a static page as the start page?

We have a ticket for this already: #7494. I think it is a good idea. We could even replace the actual check functionality locally with something like #6546, but I don't think that is a blocker to a locally served homepage with a searchbox.
