Description

On the Tor Browser Bundle 3.0alpha3 release

If you go to the menu -> Web Developer and press "Work Offline" it says:

"Tor unexpectedly exited."

Tor won't start when you disable this option again, you need to close and start the browser.

In my opinion, in addition to a NEWNYM function (#9442), there must also be the functions to stop or start Tor in this 3.0 version. The "Work Offline" button could use such functions too.

In short, there must be more control over the Tor network settings in the browser.

There is currently no way to temporarily disable Tor without closing the browser, even though I frequently need to do this.

FYI: ESR 17 is the last version where checking "Work Offline" will work if you have a local proxy configured (see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87717 for details). And, yes, this is sold as a feature.

Would it satisfy everybody here if Tor Browser set Tor's DisableNetwork config option here, rather than actually killing and starting the Tor process?

Options:

  1. Stop/Start/Restart Tor from the controller/Torbutton (from GUI).
  2. Make Tor "Work Offline" (comment:5).
  3. Leave as is.

I frequently need to do this.

For what purpose?

With TB 8 switching "Work Offline" turns the network on and off with the message:

Offline mode
Firefox is currently in offline mode and can’t browse the Web.

Press "Try Again" to switch to online mode and reload the page.

Pressing "Try again" seems to work as well.

Setting DisableNetwork=1 with nyx works and gives in TB:

The proxy server is refusing connections
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.

It would be necessary to change this message and tell how to turn the network on again.
