Description

It seems something is wrong with the Tor Cloud instances [1]. My best guess is that the instances are failing to auto-update packages and are left in a state where tor is not running, new packages are not being installed, and the instances are not doing anything useful.

I can't find anything wrong with the current Tor Cloud instances. That leaves us with:

  • Some bridges are unable to upload descriptors, possibly related to the botnet.
  • People's free tier ended and they chose to shut down their instances.
  • Old instances with Hardy may have issues with package upgrades, somehow causing tor not to run.

I'll keep an eye on the graph in the coming days/weeks. arma suggests we should ponder ways to get contact info for people running cloud bridges, so in the future we can ask them.

It looks like in April 2013 there was a usage spike of similar volume. Could this somehow be related? Do we know what happened in April?

I had occasional problems recently with my instance deciding that it's not reachable (rt.torproject.org #13056). Could that have something to do with it?
