#9892 closed enhancement (duplicate)

Knowing current exit node and asking for another

Description

With Vidalia being gone, it's now hard to have an idea of what path a connection uses through the Tor network.

But most of the time, I am actually not interested in knowing the whole path, but which exit
node is being used, so I can report any tampering that I might observe.
There is also the problem that more content providers nowadays block content by countries. Given we have many exit nodes in Germany, it's particularly visible on Youtube where many videos are blocked by the GEMA.

Using “new identity”, it's possible to ask for a new path, but in the previous case, I would
just like an exit node from another country so I can view the video I was reaching for.

The later suggestion might need #3455 to be implemented before considering the latter suggestion, so we can also split this ticket if I think they are related UI wise. If we display the current exit node somewhere, it makes sense to be able to act on it by clicking there.

See also the discussion in #2113 -- it's not exactly obvious what your "current" exit is, since what circuit you'll use depends on the characteristics of the next stream.

That said, it's easier to know what circuit your last stream *did* attach to, and the control protocol exports this info pretty well; here it's just a question of how TBB should display it to users.

I think the first half of this ticket title is a dup of #8641 (and the associated work in the parent ticket #5752). The second half is probably a dup of #9442, though I agree "New Exit" isn't exactly the same thing as "New Circuit". It does sound like the users on #9442 actually want "New Exit", but "New Circuit" is what Tor provides right now, so they'll settle for that being exposed somehow in the UI.

Feel free to reopen/retitle if you disagree or want to change the focus of this ticket somehow.
