These instructions are for OS X 10.7 - YMMV but OSX 10.7 users likely need a usbserial driver.

This URL is useful reading:

https://newit.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2128.0

The process is:

-- install the OSX drivers from the FTDI guys (the 10.6 ones work for 10.7):

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

-- plug in the dreamplug; check system profiler USB to make sure that at a hardware level, the Mac can see something attached.

-- then replace the /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist with the one you get here: http://www.plugpbx.org/downloads/Info.plist.zip

-- Or instead of replacing it, you can patch it following instructions here:

http://www.plugcomputer.org/plugwiki/index.php/Serial_terminal

-- Then un- and reload the driver:

   $ sudo kextunload -b com.FTDI.driver.FTDIUSBSerialDriver
   $ sudo kextload -b com.FTDI.driver.FTDIUSBSerialDriver

If you get any error messages, you're doing it wrong.

-- Check console.app to see something like:

   kernel: FTDIUSBSerialDriver:        0 9e889e8f start - ok

-- Then check for the device:

$ ls -las /dev | grep -i usb
0 crw-rw-rw-   1 wheel      18,   6  7 Nov 20:14 tty.usbserial-FTU838HKB
0 crw-rw-rw-   1 wheel      18,   4  7 Nov 20:14 tty.usbserial-FTU838HKA
0 crw-rw-rw-   1 wheel      18,   7  7 Nov 20:14 cu.usbserial-FTU838HKB
0 crw-rw-rw-   1 wheel      18,   5  7 Nov 20:14 cu.usbserial-FTU838HKA

And Bob's your uncle.
