Title - Privacy in Libraries

Contract time: December 1, 2017 - November 30, 2019

Goals

The goal of this project is to advance the use of practical privacy tools in libraries and their communities through the development of a privacy-focused train-the-trainer program for librarians that we will call the Library Freedom Institute. This partnership between NYU and Library Freedom Project will build on LFP’s successful shorter training programs. The project team will construct extensive curriculum and use it to train 40 geographically dispersed privacy advocate librarians who will conduct privacy training workshops for community members in their region, help their own libraries to become more privacy conscious, and act as nodes of expertise for their region.

Deliverables and Objectives

  1. Task: Take surveys of the current privacy literature in librarianship and information security, create outline for course building on important themes each week and culminating with an individual or group project.
  2. Deliverable: Curriculum for pilot program of Library Freedom Institute


  1. Task: Refine curriculum based on feedback from experts in the privacy and librarianship fields, conduct promotion at library conferences, on listservs, and with direct mailings to libraries, secure guest lecturers, create application materials and disseminate, collect applications and review.
  2. Deliverable: Pilot program of Library Freedom Institute


  1. Task: Teach pilot program for six months at 5 hours of class time per week, conduct surveys of pilot participants to evaluate pilot curriculum, repeat curriculum refinement based on feedback from field experts.
  2. Deliverable: Program evaluation, which will serve to create the curriculum for the full instance of Library Freedom Institute.


  1. Task: Conduct promotion at library conferences, on listservs, and with direct mailings to libraries curriculum refinement, review performance of previous guest lecturers and either secure their continued participation or invite new guest speakers, review application materials and make necessary changes, disseminate applications, collect applications and review.
  2. Deliverable: Full program of Library Freedom Institute


  1. Task: Teach full program for six months at 5 hours of class time per week, conduct surveys of participants to evaluate curriculum, create mechanism for continued contact with all participants, set date for first check-in.
  2. Deliverable: We define success by what Library Freedom Institute brings back to local communities. We intend to generate dozens of mini-Library Freedom Projects across the US,led by librarians who have gained practical skills to use, deploy, and teach privacy tools, and can make those tools meaningful for local needs through library policies and teaching.
