Phase Three

Timeline

September 16, 2011 - March 15, 2012.

Deliverables

Recruiting more bridges and relays

  • The Excito B3 Torouter [Runa]
    • Wait for Excito to release an update with the Tor web interface (#2791)
    • Roll out beta test program and get feedback from users (#3646)

Advocacy, outreach and support

  • Investigate the possibility of doing virtual trainings (live video streams, twitter feeds, Google+ etc) [Runa] (#4494)
  • Keep translations of Tor software and documentation up to date [Runa, partner]
  • Develop training materials in Arabic, English, and Farsi
    • Create videos explaining how to download and use Tor on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows [partner] (#4495)
  • Set up a Tor support desk:
    • Set up and evaluate the Tor support system [Runa] (#4068, #4412)
    • Find volunteer support assistants who speak Arabic, English, and/or Farsi [Runa, partner]
  • Find new ways to distribute Tor:
    • Create an IM bot that can send out Tor software and documentation [partner] (#4496)
  • Branding/animated video encouraging more people to run bridges and relays [Karen, Runa] (#4468)
  • Get more people excited about Tor:
    • Launch a video campaign using Tor training videos and animations [Tor, partner] (#4497)

Investigate ways to build and deploy an enhanced bridge infrastructure

  • Automated alerts to detect blocking events based on Tor usage data [Tom, Karsten] (#2718)
  • Automated bridge allocation to reallocate bridges from a blocked country to others that do not block [Aaron] (#5027)
  • Handle measurement flow and feedback from bridges to the bridge authority (see below)
  • Investigate scaling points to handle more bridges - we don't need to build and deploy anything at this point, research and planning will do just fine [Karsten, Runa] (#4499)
  • Write a paper (or a blog post) on the risks of being a bridge vs just a client (follow-on to On the risks of serving whenever you surf) [Steven, Roger] (#4498)

Internet censorship awareness

  • Real time information on internet censorship (could be ooni-probe, planetarian aggregator, the active scanning project) (#4501)
  • Write blog posts on strategies to avoid risk and protect online identity [Tor, partner] (#4509)
  • Development of planetarian aggregator (a website that downloads and aggregates news feeds, including blog posts) [Andrew, Runa] (#4472, #5200)
  • Compile information about censorship and security threats; the issues we and our users run into and how we deal with each one (for example a wiki, or a series of blog posts for the planet) (#4502)
  • One-stop resource hub for advice and strategies for users in Iran [partner]
