We have our bug bounties program, but that's only a tiny fraction of the topics that the world helps us with. We have our "tshirts for relay operators" program, which is awesome too.

Sebastian and I were noticing that the person who filed #18580 has really been super helpful at causing us to track down a bug that has high impact on the Tor network.

I propose that we start a program where we encourage each of the teams to reflect, each week as part of their sync, on whether they've noticed any awesome not-yet-recognized contributors. Then we send them to Jon, who can send them a swag kit if they're interested.

There is of course no requirement that each team produce a person each week. But there should be a requirement that awesome people eventually get thought of. :)

I love this idea. I wonder if it would be helpful for us to think of categories of work done on Tor, so that each week when we're reflecting, we think about all the ways that volunteers might be helping.

Here's what comes to mind immediately: translation, documentation, helping people on IRC, helping people on mailing lists, filing bug reports, running a relay in a way that ensures its long term sustainability (like, teaching the rest of your CS department or hackerspace about it), running Tor trainings.....that's all I've got for now.

I also wonder if asking for this information just from teams is the right way to do it. On the one hand, the teams already meet regularly and this could become a standing agenda item. On the other hand, writing to tor-project@ once a month would maybe produce a broader set of cool helpful people.

If it's easier for Jon if I collect shirt prefs, shipping address, etc and add it to a spreadsheet (the way we do relay shirts) I'm happy to do that.

I scheduled a slot to talk about this on the first unstructured day of the Rome meeting.

(changing ticket title since I didn't mean to imply that the folks who do the calling-out are limited to only developers.)
